The black mat holds the puzzle pieces in place and provides a dark contrast that helps you fill in gaps in the puzzle. It also easily allows you to move the in-progress puzzle pieces when necessary. Simply wrap the puzzle roll up mat around the inflatable tube and secure it with the two included elastic bands for a compact storage system.
