Best Wireless Earbuds of 2020

What are Wireless Earbuds?

Wireless earbuds are, simply put, earbuds that you wear that don't have any wires at all going to them.  If you've ever seen someone wearing these little stems of plastic in their ears or perhaps the more circular ones, then you've seen wireless earbuds in action.  In the past couple of years they have really taken off in usage since they hold their charge well and the sound is frankly amazing in some of these earbuds.

Lately, new earbuds have been created that have the ability to be used for 5+ hours before needing to get charged and there are even a few new wireless earbuds that have built-in noise canceling which was unheard of in wireless earbuds even a year ago.

There are so many choices on the marketing it can be mind-boggling.  To help, we've evaluated these earbuds to give you the low-down on which ones are the best.  Many times it is a well-known maker but sometimes the lesser-known brands can really have some amazing earbuds.

What are some of the factors we look at when evaluating and comparing earbuds?

Best Overall

Apple Airpods Pro
Price: $249

A little pricey at $249, these earbuds are among the very best.  They are truly wireless and feature an excellent fit, great sound, amazing call quality, and the active noise cancellation is easily in the top 3.

These earbuds from Apple have a transparency mode as well, which allows you to turn off the noise canceling and hear the outside world so you can have a conversation without taking the Airpods out.  If you have an iPhone you can even just say Hey Siri out loud and it can easily read out your phone notifications and such.  Very convenient.

There was a feature I didn't expect but it shows how refined these earbuds are.  If you have the Airpods Pro in your ear and the silicone earpiece isn't the best fitting one for your ear (you can switch between 3 of them), your iPhone will actually tell you so that you can switch it.  Sometimes one ear canal is a little bigger and they may not have the matching pieces but it's amazing that it lets this know so that the Active Noise Canceling is optimized.

I rate these the best overall because of all the features I mentioned as well as instant connection.  These earbuds are very refined and can even detect when the Airpods are actually in your ear.  Works instantly out of the box and just does what it says.  Add to that Sweat and Water Resistant level of IPX4 and that's why I give it the Best Overall Earbuds title.

Best Noise Canceling

Sony WF-1000XM3

The Sony WF-1000XM3 and Apple Airpods Pro are extremely close for their noise canceling abilities.  While the Airpods Pro are extremely good as noise canceling, the Sony earbuds have what appears to be a better seal with the ears which plays a part in why it has a stronger Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) ability.  The other part is that is has a little bit better noise cancellation in the very low frequencies.  Both of these are very close when it comes to which has better noise cancelling and likely the other features more than make up for the tiny difference.  If you are an iPhone user the Apple integration makes the Airpods Pro the better choice.

One thing to note here is that the Sony WF-1000XM3 has no water or sweat resistance at all.  If you plan to use them to work out, these might not be the choice for you.  Any water or moisture can break these earbuds.

Most Water-Resistant for Swimming & Workouts

TOZO T10 Wireless Earbuds
Price: $49.99

If you're planning on getting your earbuds wet on a regular basis, the TOZO T10 wireless earbuds might just be the ticket for you.  They feature an impressive IPX8 waterproof rating.  What this means is that these earbuds can stay waterproof when underwater at a depth of more than 3 feet.  The description on the product describes 1 meter (~3 feet) of water for 30 mins which describes IPX7 so these appear to be able to handle the IPX7 like other makers and then some.

In fact, TOZO lists as part of the description that it is suitable for water sports, sweating at the gym, getting rained on, and even washing the earbuds (makes sense..the sweat and all...).  That is pretty impressive for wireless earbuds under $50.

These earbuds  handle 3.5 hours playtime per charge, and 9 extra hours with the charging base.  At 12.5 hours it's nowhere near the Airpods Pro and SonyWF-1000XM3's 24-hour playtime with the base, but if you get things wet like at the beach and such, the waterproof may be far more important than 24 hours of playtime.

So let's look at the details beyond the waterproof.  It comes with a wireless charging base which is always a positive.  With over 21,500 ratings on Amazon giving it a 4.5 stars, it sure is being used quite a bit.  While I haven't tried these, there are tons of reviews that everything sounds great and they stay in place very well with the included 4 silicone ear pieces.  It does seem that these are used more for having music while working out or playing sports vs having phone calls.

Best under $50

This is one of those little hidden gems you don't read about that often. It's from a small company without the big reputation but they really deliver on their earbuds.

JLab has created an earbud with a rating of IP55 which means resistant to sweat. These are perfect for the gym and that's what a lot of the buyers are using them for. They are resistant to sweat, dirt, grime, and more, which makes them the perfect workout equipment that is very durable.

They have a 3-4 hour playtime and with the charging case a total of 14 hours of playtime.

While these are not going to rival the best, at under $50 they are something to heavily consider especially if you exercise a bit.

Best under $100

Anker Soundcore Libery 2 wireless earbuds are what I consider the best balance of the sub-$100 wireless earbuds.  They are normally $99.99 right now and there is a $10 off digital coupon.

They have a great balance of all of the criteria.  They have 7 hours of charge and 28 hours with the charging case.  The calls are crystal clear, and there is a really nice Soundcore App that lets you dial in the equalizer and other settings to make them your own.  With 5 different silicone tip sizes to choose from, you can get them fitting just right.  It all makes for a very balanced earbud that comes from a company that really takes pride in their product and I feel confident everytime I order anything from Anker that I will be happy with the product.

Best Call Quality

Plantronics BackBeat Pro 5100 True Wireless Earbuds

The Plantronics BackBeat 5100 are one of the top phone call earbuds.  With just these earbuds you can have an amazing conversation and it's quite clear to both hear and be heard.  Honestly it's not that surprising as Plantronics makes great headsets and such for office equipment which I have always been very satisfied with.

Plantronics accel at phone calls which is their main goal. While they are still great at playing music, they excel at phone calls so if you're using these mainly for business purposes, these might be the right wireless earbuds for you.

The Jabra Elite 75t can go 7.5 hours on a single charge, and with the charging case up to 28 hours of total charge.  If you don't have much time to charge up your earbuds or don't want to do it often, then these Jabra's give you maximum battery life.  With only 15 mins of charging, the earbuds get 1 hour of listening time.
